Sensory Processing
Our Services
We experience the world through our senses. Sensory processing is the way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information from the body and the environment.
When sensory processing differences make everyday activities more challenging, pediatric occupational therapy can help children better understand their sensory needs and participate more comfortably in daily life.
Some children are especially sensitive to sounds, lights, touch, movement, or certain textures. Others seek movement, deep pressure, or other sensory experiences throughout the day. Some children have difficulty noticing sensory information from their own bodies, making coordination, body awareness, or motor planning more difficult. These sensory processing differences can affect play, learning, emotional regulation, sleep, feeding, self-care, and participation at home, school, and in the community.
If your child is experiencing sensory processing challenges, our occupational therapists work to understand their unique sensory profile and how it affects everyday life. Together with families, we develop individualized strategies that build on each child’s strengths while supporting meaningful participation in the activities that matter most.
What do sensory processing differences look like?
Every child experiences sensory information differently. Sensory processing differences may include:
- NBecoming overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights, busy environments, or certain clothing
- NAvoiding messy play, grooming activities, or specific food textures
- NConstantly seeking movement by climbing, jumping, spinning, or crashing into objects
- NDifficulty sitting still or maintaining attention during daily activities
- NChallenges with transitions or unexpected changes
- NStrong emotional responses or difficulty recovering from overwhelming situations
- NDifficulty with body awareness, coordination, or motor planning
- NTrouble participating in school, family routines, or social activities
These experiences are not “good” or “bad”—they simply reflect differences in how a child’s nervous system processes sensory information. Understanding these differences helps us create supportive strategies that allow children to be successful in their daily lives.
What does sensory processing therapy look like?
At Speech4Kids, sensory processing therapy is individualized, play-based, and family-centered. Therapy sessions are designed around each child’s interests while providing opportunities to develop regulation, coordination, motor planning, and confidence through meaningful activities.
Our therapists may incorporate movement, climbing, swinging, obstacle courses, tactile play, heavy work activities, fine motor tasks, and problem-solving games to help children develop the skills they need for everyday participation. Just as importantly, we partner with families to identify practical strategies that can be incorporated into home, school, and community routines.
Rather than trying to change who a child is, our goal is to understand what their nervous system is communicating and provide the supports that help them thrive. We celebrate each child’s unique strengths while helping them build the skills they need to navigate their world with greater confidence and independence.
Our therapists have completed focused training in:
- NSensory processing assessment and intervention
- NSensory-based strategies for home, school, and community environments
- NSelf-regulation and emotional regulation
- NMotor planning and coordination
- NFine motor and visual motor development
- NFamily-centered, neurodiversity-affirming pediatric practice
More About Sensory Processing Therapy
Every child’s sensory needs are unique. There is no “right” way to experience the world, and sensory differences are a natural part of human diversity. Occupational therapy focuses on understanding each child’s individual sensory profile and helping them develop strategies that support participation in everyday life.
Whether your child is overwhelmed by sensory experiences, constantly seeking movement, or having difficulty with regulation, our therapists work alongside your family to create supportive, individualized solutions. Our goal is to help children feel understood, confident, and successful while honoring who they are.
